You probably already know that Kristy at Keepin’ It Kind hosts a wonderful annual Christmas cookie swap where vegan cooks from around the blogosphere share their favorite recipes.  We are deep into 25 days of amazing yumminess, so please take some time to browse through the sweet offerings.  This is my second year to participate (last year I “brought” Molasses Crinkles) and today I’m sharing a recipe for traditional Sicilian Fig Cookies.  The recipe comes with a funny story from my dad’s childhood.

In other recipe news…Though An Unrefined Vegan has been quiet, I’ve been busy over at my Tumblr site with holiday season-inspired recipes like: Grapefruit & Anise Chocolate Chip CookiesRaw Gingerbread Tartlets, Cherry-Orange Braid Bread (which would make an ideal Christmas morning breakfast or a thoughtful hostess gift), and Chocolate Gingerbread Granola (recipe available December 20).  All of these treats have the warm and spicy flavors I associate with the winter holidays and you will only find the recipes on Tumblr.     I’ve never heard of Keepin’ it Kind’s Christmas cookie swap. What a cool event! I thought about hosting an in person vegan Christmas cookie swap this year, but I know so few vegans that it would likely have turned into a party of one.

    Your fig cookies look amazing Annie! They’re like tiny little fancy pop tarts (much tastier, however!).

      A party of one cookie swap would be very dangerous, wouldn’t it? All those cookies… :-). I love Kristy’s idea because I just don’t bake massive quantities of goodies during the holidays (it’s just me and Kel) so it gives me a chance to bake something special to “share.” Best part is seeing what others bring, and this year there have been some outstanding offerings.     All of your recipes sound wonderful and I love the look of that gingerbread tartlet, very sophisticated. I didn’t know about the cookie swap but it sounds like a feast of tastiness I ought to check out.

    Um… I wasn’t hungry when I opened this page up… Foiled! This is a great idea–and a local vegan meetup in my town did a cookie swap that I missed, a few days ago. Anyway, your plates look gorgeous. You are making me realize that there is a traditional family recipe that I need to veganize! Inspiring, as always, Annie! Thanks!!

        Hi! It’s a Croatian walnut roll that we pronounce “pahk-ah-TEE-zah,” but nice seen written povitica. In my family, it was what was served after midnight Christmas mass with ham. It is basically hot roll dough rolled with a super sweet walnut, cinnamon, sugar filling. Love. It.
