What a positively written piece. It’s very encouraging to know that there are things you can do to help your loved one (and yourself) to cope with diagnosis and to move on in a positive way. Keeping hope alive is surely a most important part of it all, doing what you can to alleviate the stress for your loved one and finding out about all the options. Using the resources that are there for you seems such an obvious point, but one I can imagine easily overlooking.

It’s a weird thing – preparing for the worst but keeping hope alive. I guess managing those two very different things is a human trait. Part of me believed he would beat the odds but another part wondered how he possibly could. Interestingly, I think he had hope until the very end.

You are such an amazing sister. To do all this extra research and to ditch the statistics and averages written in books is so heartwarming and I can feel your love for your brother through these words!! Also that restaurant sounds amazing!!

Acceptance of our lot isn’t an easy thing to do and your wonderful piece illustrates that sometimes you just have to accept and move on to really caring and loving for the time that you have left. Cheers for this wonderful Anniesque insight and for all of the people that you are going to help through this series of articles :). You rock Annie :)

I saw this posted on FB today and thought of you and this series you’re writing. Interesting read–I must say it *was* shocking to hear what people said to my mom when she was ill. The nerve, the self-centeredness was breathtaking. I hope your brother didn’t have to deal with this.

OMG, I know! It’s so weird. My mom actually had a “friend” say to her, “I’m sorry you’re ill, but (I’m paraphrasing) what have you done for me lately?” My dad and I wanted to punch her. I mean, what the hell? People are so “unconscious”….
